In 1971 this Woolworths store had a major makeover with an industrial style facade made of reinforced plastic panels and yellow illuminated letters. You can see ‘Fresh Fruit’ and ‘Fresh Foods’ signs on the wall, making the store look like a supermarket.

After Woolworths closed, it soon became a 99p store. This caused a lot of excitement as this photo shows people queuing on the opening day.

The 99p stores were bought by Poundland.

Poundland have now taken the panels off, but the windows, doors and floor are as they were when this was a Woolworths.
