32 – 36 Church Street, Eccles, Manchester M30 0DH
Woolworths opened in the town on Eccles in Manchester in 1927 – and yes that is Eccles as in where Eccles cakes originate from. Woolworths was on a corner building on Church Street – see it pictured below.
Unfortunately I can’t find any more photos of the store as a Woolworths, but we can guess there was a 1950s makeover from the current building today – the clue is in the upper floor windows.
Eccles Woolworths closed before 1995 as it is not on that store list – we can guess it closed in the 1980s. It was until recently a Wilkinsons, but they have moved. Then it was a ‘Furniture Superstore’ but at present the building is vacant.
