19 – 20 Market Street, Wednesbury, Staffs WS10 7AY
Woolworths opened in Wednesbury in 1928 on Market Street. It’s the rectangular building on the right side of this photo, in the centre. There is a gap on the left side of Woolworths – that is where Burtons was to be built.
Here in this 1950s photo, you can see the Maypole, Burton, Woolworths and a bank on the end. At the back of Woolworths, in the 1950s/60s, was a workshop that repaired televisions and radios and sold spare parts.

Alan Bayley worked here around 1964/65, and he remembers they received the “best improved store” award. In the below staff photo of his, the manager Mr. Carr is in the centre.

The store lasted until the end, closing in December 2008.
It became a Bright House, but today it is a wedding shop. And it looks as though the Woolworths doors are still there.
