Woolworths opened in Ilkley in 1938. The store was purpose- built.

Woolworths traded here for 70 years, closing when the chain went bust in December 2008.
Now the unit has been split into two, and is occupied by Caffe Nero and Mountain Warehouse. I like how they’ve put in a Woolworths style middle pillar in between the two units, with the cream tiles!

I visit Ilkley regularly (was there last week in fact) and had forgotten completely about this store. Strange how quickly what used to be on our high streets slips from our minds, particularly if they are everyday run-of-the-mill stores. There is a Boyes now just around the corner which is a similar type of outfit. It used to be a Sunwin House (Co-op) department store. Another blast from the past! Thanks for jogging my memory.
