Woolworths opened in Archway, North London in 1939. It was very close to Archway London Underground station.

This store suffered a significant fire in the first floor stockroom, shortly after the first reorganisation, post the Paternoster/Woolworth Holdings acquisition. So many people from other stores ‘mucked in’ and helped with the clean up to get it ‘up and running’ as soon as possible. “Big Jim’ Slater the Regional Operations Manager for NLEA was just brilliant at organising and dealing with this kind of project.
