60 Cotmandene Crescent, St Paul’s Cray, Kent BR5 2RG
Woolworths opened in St Paul’s Cray, Kent, in 1953, opened by manager Charles Barkley. His daughter Carole shared his story on the Woolworths History and Photos group:
“My father started in Slough as a Floorwalker – the manager was a Mr Garry. After the war I think he went to High Wycombe as an Assistant Manager, then Deputy Manager and then in about 1956 he went as Manager to open a brand new store at St Paul’s Cray in Kent, it was Cotmandene Crescent. Then he went to Surbiton, Walton on Thames, Leatherhead and finally to Ealing Broadway which was his final store before retiring. I have memories of learning to ride a bike cycling round the counters in St Paul’s Cray – when the store was closed!”
Woolworths traded here for 33 years, closing in January 1986.
Today it’s a Family Shopper and Post Office. Although I can’t find any photos of this as a Woolworths, you can imagine how it might have looked from the design of the shopfront.
