Douglas, Isle of Man – Store 158

32 – 36 Strand Street, Douglas, Isle of Man IM1 2EG

Woolworths opened in the capital of the Isle of Man – Douglas – in 1924. 10 years later, the store was extended and had an Art Deco makeover with a facade made of stone.

I found this memory from 1946 online:

“At the Woolworth’s store in Douglas, Isle of Man, I can remember being lifted up to see the button counter and choosing buttons for a dress my mother was making for me. It was 1946 and I was four years old at the time. I think I asked to see the buttons every time we went there. I vividly remember the bright colours” Ruth Wyllie – Extract from The Wonder of Woolies: Memories from both sides of the counter by Derek Phillips

The store had a basement, a ground floor and 2 upper floors. Former store manager Peter Taylor remembers it being a great place to work with a great team.

This was how the store looked inside on the last day of trading. It closed in December 2008.

Today you will find Dealz in the building – this is Poundland for the Isle of Man, but as everything is priced at £1.20, they had to give the store a different name. The Art Deco facade is still there, so take a look at this grand building if you are ever in Douglas.
