Rotherham – Store 385

23-25 College Street, Rotherham, South Yorkshire S65 1AE

Woolworths opened in Rotherham in 1930 on College Street. It was a very large L-shaped store with two entrances (see the last photo). It looks like it was in an existing parade of shops, but both Woolworths entrances have the central pediment – so perhaps this whole parade was built in 1930 and Woolworths had an input into the design. But that is just speculation.

This photo shows the store in the 1990s. It lasted until the end, closing in December 2008.

It soon became a B&M store, and you can see both entrances in this photo.

Sheffield (The Moor) – Store 143

15 – 19 The Moor, Sheffield S1 3LF

Woolworths opened in Sheffield on The Moor in 1923. It was the first branch in Sheffield – a second Woolworths opened in nearby Haymarket very soon after.

Sheffield was heavily bombed in World War II and Woolworths was destroyed along with most of the buildings along The Moor.

Woolworths was rebuilt and you can recognise the familiar style of the facade in this 1952 photo.

Shortly after this photo was taken in the 1980s, Woolworths reduced it’s size and the left side became Superdrug.

In this photo you get a nice close-up of the stairs up to the store and you can see what was typically inside a Woolworths in the noughties. Look at the peppermint blue pillars and those blue wire baskets on the right.

This Woolworths closed in 2008 when the chain went bust, and it became a Peacocks store.

Then it became a TJ Hughes, but they went bust also.

Today all the stores along this side of The Moor are empty and this street in being redeveloped. Who knows if the Woolworths facade will be kept or not. If you want to have a look at it, be quick!
