The store was modernised in 1966. Less than six years later, on 14 April 1972, the store closed and moved to the new Castlegate shopping centre.

Woolworths traded from the Castlegate shopping centre right until the end in December 2008. Former employee Alex Wood says, “I started my Woolworths and retailing career in 336 Stockton in 1996. A great store with some fantastic people and managers over the years. Hated going in the boiler room though…” Tracy Wearmouth tells us, “336 Stockton was a store I was an ASM , SM and Area Manager for. Fab big store with a great team. Stories….chasing one of the many shop lifters and catching him on the zebra crossing outside and ripping his top off! Scaring Angela Rutter through the office hatch! Doing a stocktake in a wheelchair cause I’d pulled my ligament. Loved it! Good times ”

Although I can’t find any photos from when it was open, you can see how it looked from this photo after closure. I like how it says ‘Welcome to Woolworths Stockton’ above the doors. You can see the 1970s doors with the thick steel strip across the centre and the ‘W’ on the door handles. Glimpsing through the windows you can see how large a store it was. This was the outside entrance, and there was also another entrance to the shopping centre.

You can still see the 1970s stores today, with the ‘W’s scrubbed off, at the B&M store that trades from the site today.

As for the original Woolworths at 144 High Street, that building still exists. It was a YMCA shop and a BHP Furniture shop – but today it is vacant again.
