89-101 Belgrave Road, Leicester LE4 6AS
Woolworths opened another store in Leicester in 1954, this one on Belgrave Road. This photo dates from December 1953 and it shows 89-101 Belgrave Road, Leicester. The row of small shops was being vacated, as the entire block had been bought by F.W. Woolworth, with the intention of opening the new Belgrave Road branch the following year.

Thank you David Hinchcliffe for the below photo.
“Anyone who grew up in Belgrave in the 1950s and ’60s will have memories of Woolworths.
It was by today’s standards, rather old-fashioned, with glass-fronted counters with the wares on display and assistants behind the counters to serve you.
It sold all manner of delights and was especially loved by children who would enjoy spending their pocket money there.
This was one of three Woolworths stores in the city at that time. The original was in Gallowtree Gate, where BHS is today and then, around the same time as the Belgrave Road store opened, another was opened in the Market Place. This was in premises previously occupied by Winn’s Oriental Hall restaurant and it has since been demolished.”

This store closed in the early 1970s. Today the former Woolworths building is occupied by flats on the upper floors and shops on the ground floor.
