Gloucester Woolworths – Store 837

12-18 Eastgate Street, Gloucester, Gloucestershire GL1 1PH

Woolworths opened on Eastgate Street in Gloucester in 1954. There was already a nearby store on Westgate Street (Store 125).

It looks like it was a very large store. The Westgate store closed in the 1970s, when Woolworths consolidated stores that were too close together. So this Eastgate St store carried on trading until January 2009.

Today M&S is in the building.

This one was a big Woolies over two levels with a fairly big café in the basement level. I seem to remember the loos used to be coded and you had to buy something in the café to get the code for them. I believe the store itself was even bigger at one point as I think it extended over to Southgate Street but when that bit closed it became M&S (there were two in Gloucester at the time with the other one being on Northgate Street, now TK Maxx) and it was still possible to walk between the two internally until Woolies shut. I always found it strange that M&S didn’t keep their Southgate Street store open when they moved into the rest of Woolies although that side is currently empty (it was B&M until last year) so maybe they’ll extend back into it again but who knows!
