33 High Street, Uckfield, East Sussex TN22 1AH
A year after WWII began, a few new Woolworths stores continued opening in 1940. One of these was Uckfield. The style of this store was similar to Store 750 Colindale – a modern rendition of Classical architecture with porthole windows (Source: Woolworth’s 100 Years on the High Street – K. Morrison)

The above photo was taken in March 1940 just after the store opened. You can see the neighbouring units are not occupied yet.
Woolworths traded here for 68 years, closing in December 2008.

Today there is a WHSmith here. The porthole windows are now covered up.

From the age of 9-14 (1960-1965) this was my ‘local’ Woolworth (we lived in the village of Nutley just 5 miles away). Little was I to know that a family house move to East Grinstead would lead to me working for FWW as a Saturday ‘boy’ and that job would kick start a 23 year career.
